Friends, Global clothing and footwear brand Nike made US$1.4 billion in profits between December 2020 and March 2021. Meanwhile, workers throughout Nike's supply chain have lost their jobs and are struggling to make ends meet. In July 2020, the Violet Apparel factory in Cambodia suddenly closed, leaving over 1,200 garment workers without work during the pandemic. While Nike claims that the company has not produced clothes there since 2006, worker testimonies and photos, and production records show that the factory had been producing Nike clothes as a subcontractor supplier for years, including through the end of 2019. To date, workers are owed $343,174 in unpaid severance alone, which amounts to less than 1% (0.02%) of what Nike earned in its last quarter. While the workers have demanded compensation, as well as their legally owed bonuses and unpaid wages, Nike has yet to pay or take any responsibility. |
